Aircraft Maintenance Job Outlook

The job growth for aircraft and avionics mechanics should be about as fast as the average for all other occupations.  For individuals who complete an aircraft mechanic training program, job opportunities should be favorable; however job opportunities at major airlines will be competitive.

During years 2008 to 2018, it’s expected that employment will increase about 7% which is the same rate as the average for all occupations.  Air traffic is expected to increase because of an expanding economy and growing population and as a result the need for more aircraft mechanics to work on more airplanes.

Currently, there is an increasing trend by several large airlines to outsource maintenance work overseas; however, most air line companies still prefer that aircraft maintenance is performed in the U.S. because overseas contractors may not comply with stringent U.S. safety regulations.

Job openings through the year 2018 will be a result of many aircraft mechanics retiring over the next decade.  Additionally, job openings are expected to come from current aircraft mechanics leaving for work in related fields, such as automotive repair.

Additionally, contributing to favorable future aircraft mechanic job opportunities is the fact that fewer students are entering technical schools to learn maintenance trades.   Students who have the ability to work in maintenance are going to college to study computer technology or work in maintenance occupations with better working conditions. If this trend continues, the supply of trained aircraft mechanics will not keep pace with the needs of the air transportation industry.

Job opportunities will continue to be best at regional and commuter airlines, at FAA repair stations and in general aviation.  Regional and commuter airlines are the fast growth segment of the airline industry, however, wages at these airlines are lower than those of the major airlines, so they attract less job applicants.  Additionally, jobs will become available because experience aircraft mechanics will leave to work for the major airlines.  There is more competition for jobs at the major airlines because of the higher wages and travel benefits.

In the future, job opportunities in the airline industry are better than in the past and for applicants with experience and an Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) certification.  Aircraft mechanics, who are experienced with technological advances in composite materials, electronics, etc., are in big demand.  Finally, mechanics willing to relocate to rural areas will have better job opportunities.
